Monday while everyone else was at the Yeah Yeah Yeahs show at Orpheum, I caught The Magic Numbers at Richards. I always used to confuse The Magic Numbers with Shout Out Louds. Anways, it was nice to see a band genuinely smiling at the audience and appreciative to be there. It showed in the songs too which stood out way more than on the album, which is kinda front and back loaded. Highlights were the catchy new songs, Forever Lost, and Love is a Game.

Earlier in the evening I was at a Hugo Boss store opening party put on by Harry Rosen. I met Harry's son Larry, who thanked me for the patronage and then proceeded to check out the labels on my clothes. It was kinda like meeting Mr. Burns' son Larry. This guy's got more bread than a prison meat loaf. He's rich, I tell ya.

Hey, who am I talking to?

Tuesday, was The Presets and Ladytron show at Commodore. Apparently Ladytron fans aren't hipsters cause it seemed like not many had heard of The Presets yet. They play club music for kids who don't like club music, says their promos. They're good if you're into VHS or Beta, Cut Copy, Rinocerose, or Who Made Who. Plus 2 man bands are so hot right now. Their album hasn't been released in Canada yet, but it's out now in the US. Great finish with my favourite from the album "I Go Hard, I Go Home".

The chics in Ladytron have nice haircuts. Karen O still has the best haircut in Rock though. Their drummer is great too, but at times I suspected a drum machine. The band is pretty tight and it's fun to see some of them performed live, others were kinda boringish. Surprisingly "Destroy Everything You Touch" felt kinda stilted, but Cracked LCD, Sugar, He Took Her to a Movie, and Seventeen were all strong.

Today I went to buy the new Secret Machines - Ten Silver Drops album, but it was priced at $22.49. Fuck that.

What was remarkable was how often Dan changes the incantations of the words and syllables from the album version. Often different words are emphasized in a line, even different sounds in a word. My favourite was how he changed the line "cause nothing ever could" in Looters' Follies into a mock sing-a-long. Which is funny cause all those changes make it harder to sing-a-long to. In your head that is, cause you shouldn't sing out loud at a show.

Yeah, I got the setlist.

The Christa Min

Great first impression, looking forward to hearing the rest. Stream more on their Myspace page.

Ladyhawk

My most anticipated album right now is the debut Ladyhawk album, out 6/6/6. Probably since it hasn't leaked yet. As great as this song is, Came in Brave is even better, which used to be on their site, but isn't now.

Destroyer
Oh yeah, Destroyer is headling. He's alright.

Really looking forward to this show. Vancouver is cranking out the good bands lately. I'll be in the back somewhere.

I was asked to DJ for a while at a friend's party this weekend. While I have no aspirations of being a real DJ, it was pretty fun. I don't know how to (really) play any instruments, but I can play the stereo better than anyone I know. Well that and Ironman on the guitar.

I didn't really care either when no one was dancing either. It was early and no one was drunk and I got to play what I like. When everyone is dancing, it's way more pressure and you gotta can the Copy and Kavinsky for Billie Jean and Deceptacon.

I wasn't sure what the setup was gonna be beforehand, if there'd be a mixer or turntables or what. If there was just going to be a CD player, I brought a mix I created earlier in the day. I was going to press play and walk away. It ended up being 2 CDJ's, ipods and a cd player plugged into a mixer. I ended up mixing everything live so I didn't actually play this at the party, but here it is anyway for you:
